Patient Portal: Innovation at the World-renowned Ophthalmology Clinic

Clínica Oftalmológica Barraquer

This case demonstrates the potential of digital transformation in the healthcare field and how the implementation of patient-centered technological solutions can result in higher-quality and more accessible medical care.

The "Portal Paciente" project at the Barraquer Clinic has set a significant precedent in the digital transformation of the healthcare sector. Attention to security, privacy, and customization has been crucial in providing a solution that not only enhances operational efficiency but also enriches the patient experience, establishing a new standard in digital healthcare.

This project aimed to enhance the interaction between patients and the clinic, thereby optimizing healthcare services and facilitating access to high-quality ophthalmological services.

The main challenge was to transform and streamline the points of contact between patients and the clinic, as well as to facilitate communication with medical professionals.

The goal was also to provide a platform that would enable autonomous appointment management and deliver relevant information in an accessible and timely manner, similar to what was achieved in the case of Hospital Clínic.

We conceived and developed a multi-device web application, accessible from any operating system without the need for download or updates, with a high degree of usability tested.

The "Portal Paciente" platform includes features such as:

  • Appointment Scheduling and Management: Allowing patients to request, modify, and cancel appointments.
  • Files and Documentation: Facilitating the consultation, request, and download of documents and medical information.
  • Patient Profile and Data: Where patients and professionals can view and modify data, streamlining previously manual internal processes.
  • Delegated Patient: Allowing the management of supervised accounts for guardians of dependent family members and minors.

The project does not stop here; we identified several opportunities for future development of the platform, such as being a source of information on internal hospital processes and a direct communication channel between patients and healthcare professionals, as well as providing personalized advice on specific patient pathologies.

With the implementation of this platform, the Barraquer Clinic has significantly improved the patient experience, reducing waiting times, facilitating access to medical services, and gaining efficiency in the work of healthcare professionals, resulting in more effective and personalized medical care.

The analysis of flows and strategic design work has provided valuable data and insights that help the Barraquer Clinic better understand patient needs and optimize available resources.

We faced two fundamental challenges:

  1. Security: Ensuring the integrity and privacy of patient information was crucial. We chose an integration through APIs, avoiding data persistence and enabling the secure consumption of ERPs, such as the integration with Salus.
  2. Privacy: Addressing GDPR restrictions was essential to ensure the legal compliance of the project.

We adopted our Iterative and Incremental Digital Product methodology. The initial product, with basic and common functionalities, was designed to allow scalability and adaptability to the services of each health center.

The multidisciplinary product team, consisting of a product owner, a frontend developer, a UX designer, and a backend developer, led the process from the beginning, making decisions and autonomously prioritizing solutions that directly impacted business needs.

Strategic Technology Choice:
At the core of our strategy to ensure the security and privacy of patient information, we decided to work with APIs that allow us to avoid the persistence of sensitive data. Through the consumption of ERPs, as in our integration with Salus, we could ensure that crucial information remains secure and, at the same time, efficiently accessible to medical professionals. This decision not only strengthened confidentiality and trust in our digital platform but also allowed smooth interoperability with existing systems, facilitating a seamless transition to digital transformation and complying with the most demanding regulatory standards. This security-focused approach proved crucial for the success of the project, positioning the Barraquer Clinic at the forefront of innovation in digital ophthalmic care management.
